Modern La Jolla Remodel by Inplace Studio

La Jolla Custom Kitchen Remodel

When the homeowners came to Inplace Studio they were searching for a turn-key family home in the La Jolla area that met their standards of design, quality and location. After a tireless search, we came across this property as it had the potential to meet their lifestyle goals, however, it needed extensive remodeling! The home had the right square footage, orientation on the site, and privacy but its floor plan and finishes were not up to par.

The entry was underwhelming and the kitchen was closed off from the family room. The master suite was not large enough and the family required 3 kid’s rooms. So, we spun the floor plan around and utilized a disconnected living room space for the master, swapped the dining room and office spaces, opened the wall between the kitchen and family room. The kid’s wing ended up with three bedrooms and a playroom.

The home also had something rare for La Jolla, a walk-out basement! This space ended up being re-worked but was the perfect spot for a guest suite, wine cellar and theater.

The overall look and feel of the home is light and airy, but with a strong emphasis on the linear geometry. The lines of the home are reinforced with the mahogany trimmed doors and windows along with the beam and skylight details.

The master bedroom ceiling was one of the best parts of the original home and we worked to preserve it in the new design by “floating” the bed-wall and closets beneath the sloping curved redwood.

This ceiling was the inspiration for many of the finishes used throughout the home such as the teak floors, mahogany trim and cedar soffits. The kitchen cabinets are Teak and the master bath are Koa wood as well.

In the Master Bathroom, the stone surfaces are Ocean Blue Travertine walls, Fusion Quartzite counters and Seagrass Limestone flooring.
