Kitchen Remodel: European Design Meets Classic California Ranch

When we began working with the Riera-Ingles family they shared their concept images and vision for their project, but there was a disconnect between what the existing house was; a tired 1960’s La Jolla suburban ranch and their personal style; sophisticated European modern design. They are from Barcelona, Spain and were accustomed to more minimal design, but really appreciated the charm of the old house, particularly the interior courtyard.

The first order of business was to open the space up to the courtyard and create a better flow from indoors to outdoors. The new open floor plan called for a kitchen that was minimal and did not create too much visual noise to detract from the views outside. We initially thought shaker style would be the right choice given the existing style of the house, but the homeowner/ interior designer opted to go with the minimalist SieMatic S2 as that reflected their personal style.  Once this decision was made, the tone was set for the rest of the remodel and the baths and furnishings followed the more minimal style and created a great contrast to the existing ranch vibe. The floor in the kitchen was selected by the homeowner as a nod to their Spanish heritage where highly decorative concrete tiles are used extensively.
